***************************************** * Furthur v1.7.5 OS X Read Me * * * * April 3, 2005 * ***************************************** NOTE RE: JAVA You must have installed a Java runtime (JRE) on your system of AT LEAST 1.4.1 or Furthur will not work. This installer does not provide a JRE for you. Apple bundles a JRE with OS X, which you can use. We recommend that you upgrade your Apple JRE to at least version 1.4.2. You can find information on upgrading here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/javaupdate142.html To use Java 1.4.2, you must upgrade to at least OS X 10.3.1, which, if you are running an OS X version prior to 10.3, is not free. Furthur no longer runs with any 1.3.x series JRE. It was announced in the FurthurNet 1.7.4 README that FurthurNet 1.7.4 would likely be the last version to support Java 1.3.x. We are no longer able to support older JREs on any platform due the significant improvements we are able to offer you with more recent JREs. In addition, please note that JRE 1.4.1 has several bugs that cause Furthur to draw the screen incorrectly. Although JRE 1.4.1 will run with OS X versions through 10.2.8, we still recommend that you install JRE 1.4.2 or later. You can find information on JRE 1.4.1 here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25367 Please note that if you have a version of OS X prior to 10.2.6, you may have to pay to upgrade to at least 10.2 in order to get Java 1.4.1 and other free updates through the system's Software Update. To determine which JRE is installed on your system, open a Terminal and type "java -version" > enter (no quotes). --------------------------------------------------------- NOTE RE: APPLE JRE BUGS: Please note that Apple's JRE contains several bugs that impact OS X users. First, hitting "cancel" buttons may cause Furthur's menus to grey-out and become non-responsive. If so, you will have to terminate Furthur by clicking the red dot in the application window, selecting Exit from the File menu, or selecting Quit from the Dock. As a workaround we have moved Furthur's primary menu functions within the application itself instead of using the system's menu bar. This will hopefully be corrected with the next release of Furthur. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS We have released an installer for Furthur 1.7.5 which should install automatically to your download folder if you are using Safari as your web browser. Contents of the Furthur 1.7.5 Mac installation: a folder named "FurthurNet 1.7.5", containing: *FurthurNet *README.TXT *license.txt *changelog.txt If you have that feature disabled, or used a different browser to download Furthur 1.7.5, you will need to double-click on the FurthurNet175.dmg file that is in your default download location (usually your Desktop) and then copy that folder to wherever you like (typically, your Applications folder, or the Desktop). If this is your first time downloading FurthurNet, you can then drag the FurthurNet app to your Dock and click on it to launch! IF YOU ARE UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION OF FURTHUR: FIRST: See if you have Furthur 1.7.3 of 1.7.4 installed. If you do, then you need only copy certain files, as explained below. To locate the program files for Furthur 1.7.3 or 1.7.4, try one of the following: * If Furthur icon is in your dock, click and hold on the icon and select Show in Finder from the menu that pops up. * If Furthur icon is on your desktop, click on it and press (Command-R or select Show Original from the File menu. * Click on Finder/desktop, press (Command-Shift-A) to open your Applications folder. IF THIS HAPPENS, JUST RETURN THE FOLDER TO ITS ORIGINAL NAME. You may now start FurthurNet 1.7.5 by double clicking on the new FurthurNet app in the Finder, or by clicking on it from the Dock. That's it, you're done.
